Pangasius Shark

Pangasius Shark

The exuberant pangasius shark is also known as the iridescent sharkfish, pangasius sutchi, or Pangasius hypophthalmus , the latter being its scientific name . It is one of the species of cat sharks, and is part of the Pangasiidae family.

Where does the pangasian shark live?

It is a freshwater fish, native to Southeast Asia , and is distributed in countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand. Their largest populations inhabit the Chao Phraya and Mekong rivers.

Characteristics of the pangasian shark

Its body shape is slim and streamlined, with a large, rounded snout that extends in a horizontal line. The standard size of these sharks is a little over a meter, however, being in captivity they grow much less, and their life span is even shortened.

The color of the skin is very striking , with shades between blue and gray in the upper part, white nuances in the lower part, fins darker than the other areas, a particular whitish spot in the middle of the eyes and a line white that divides it in half. It is important to note that there are cases of complete and partial albinism, although these are usually very rare.

What do pangasius sharks eat?

The most surprising thing about this shark is that it will have no consideration with any organism whose size fits the opening of its mouth, this means that they are capable of ingesting all kinds of prey , as long as they fit in a bite.

They are omnivorous, and generally eat anything, although among their preferences are small fish, crustaceans, shrimp and marine vegetation.

Do pangasius sharks eat people?

No, they really are too small a species to ingest a human being , and too shy to provoke a confrontation. However, adults can cause damage with their fins and spines, so it is advisable not to get too close to them.

Reproduction of pangasius sharks

Between the spring and summer seasons, pangasius sharks make a migratory journey in order to carry out the reproductive period , that is why they swim upstream, until they find the point where there is more current and where the depth of the water is greater.

On the other hand, reproduction in captivity has become impossible, since these fish cannot thrive in closed ponds. As a result, giant natural ponds have been created, where they are cultivated for food purposes.

life expectancy of pangasius sharks

When they are in an ideal place to develop, they can reach 17 years of life . And in captivity that statistic is estimated to be cut in half or less.

Is the pangasian shark in danger of extinction?

No, thanks to the fact that they are highly cultivated in some Asian countries, which frequently market them. At least at the moment there are no data that point to it.

Curiosities of the pangasian shark

  • They can eat anything they see in their path, as long as it fits in their mouth.
  • They are very nervous, and if they are in captivity they tend to hurt themselves with the walls of the aquariums, therefore special care must be taken with them.
  • When they go to mate, they fight against the currents of the rivers, in order to find the right point to carry out the sexual act.
